Corona Virus and the effect on the Courts
Please be advised that all Courts in New York State, effective 5pm on March 16, 2020, are closed with certain exceptions.
Criminal and Supreme Courts are closed except for arraignments on new arrests and emergency applications. If a loved one was arrested, they will generally see a judge within 24 hours. That location may have changed due to staffing issues.
Depending on what happens at the arraignment, they may not go back to Court for 30-45 days.
For those with pending criminal cases, appearance by defendants is waived for the same 30-45 day period. If a person is in jail, the shorter date will apply for now.
Family Court and Supreme Court are under similar restrictions.
Jail visits by family at certain facilities are restricted and limited even for attorneys.
